Hadhrat Rabi’ah bin Ka’ab radiallahu anhu

Hadhrat Rabi’ah bin Ka’ab radiallahu anhu was blessed with the honour of accepting Islam at a very young age. From the time he set his eyes on the blessed countenance of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, he was overcome with such love which permeated his entire self. One day he said to himself, ‘What is wrong with you, why do you not present yourself as a servant to Nabi sallallahu alayhi wa sallam?’

Nabi sallallahu alayhi wa sallam hounored him by accepting him as a Khaadim and from that day on, he would always be on call day and night. It was his habit that during the early hours of the morning, he would present water to Nabi sallallahu alayhi wa sallam to make whudu for tahajjud salaah. On one occasion, Nabi sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said to him, “Ask what you desire and I will give it to you” He took a moment to think and replied’ “give me some time to think over it Ya Rasulullah” Nabi sallallahu alayhi wa sallam gladly obliged.

This was a youngster who had no wealth nor family. He was poor with no worldy status. If it was one of us, we would ask for some material or physical comfort. But this was a Sahabi after all, whose focus was deeply driven by the strength of Imaan and the reality of the hereafter. He realized that this world is temporary and the eternal comfort of the hereafter is the ultimate goal. With this is mind, he sets off to present the most beautiful, intelligent and wise request. “Ya Rasullullah, Please make dua that I am your close companion in Jannah!” Rasullullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was most impressed by his answer and asked him that who advised you to ask for this. Hadhrat Rabi’ah radiallahu anhu replied that I thought to myself that I should choose that which is eternal over that which is temporary.

Nabi sallallahu alayhi wa sallam then instructed him to exert himself in Salaah as this will aid in achieving this lofty position of being the companion of Nabi sallallahu alayhi wa sallam in Jannah. Not too long after this incident, Rasullullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam called him one day and asked him if he wanted to get married. He replied that he didn’t want to be diverted from the service of Nabi sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and that he also did not possess any wealth to give as Mahr. This happened on two occasions until he realized that Nabi sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was in fact alluding that he should marry. Rasullullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam arranged for him to marry a woman from the ansaar and his mahr was also taken care-off by a prominent Sahaabi from the Banu Aslam tribe. If that wasn’t enough, even his walima was done with no effort from his side. This is how Allah Ta’ala takes care of his servants when they dedicate themselves to His obedience.

Thereafter Allah Ta’ala opened up the wealth of this world to him as well. On one occasion, he had a small dispute with Abu Bakr radiallahu anhu regarding a date palm which both had laid claim too. In the discussion, Abu Bakr radiallahu anhu said something undesirable to him. Immediately Siddeeq Akbar felt bad and insisted that he retaliate with the same wording. Rabi’ah radiallahu anhu refused out of respect and honour for the position of Hadhrat Abu Bakr radiallahu anhu. When the matter was presented to Nabi sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, he was most impressed by his conduct and then asked him to seek forgiveness on behalf of Abu Bakr radiallahu anhu. He glady did so whilst tears flowed down the cheeks of Abu Bakr radiallahu anhu.

When we take a look at these incidents of Rabi’ah radiallahu anhu, we should take lesson that when Allah Ta’ala showers His grace upon his servant, then none can stop the favours which rain down in this world and the next. Together with that, the person is inspired to behave in a manner which is most pleasing to Rasullulah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, which ultimately is the pleasure of Allah Ta’ala.

Guidelines for Practical and Sunnat Exams

Respected Moulana / Apa

Assalaamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuhu

May Allah bless you with aafiyah in dunya and Aakhirat.

In the third term, the practicals and sunnat exams are taken in all the Ta’limi Board Makaatib.

Regarding this exam, please take note of the following;

PRACTICALS

  1. Teaching the children how to make wudhu and perform Salaah is an OBJECTIVE of maktab teaching.
  2. Every child in every grade must know how to make istinjaa, make wudhu and perform Salaah.
  3. Although exams will be conducted only for the Grade 3 upwards, the Grade R, 1 and 2 children must also be taught how to make wudhu and perform Salaah.
  4. The Ustaaz/Apa must first properly demonstrate the entire wudhu/Salaah to the entire class.
  5. Thereafter every child must demonstrate it to the Ustaaz/Apa
  6. The Ustaaz/Apa must correct any mistakes and perfect the method of wudhu and Salaah keeping in mind that that these children will be making wudhu and performing Salaah everyday of their lives.
  7. If a child comes to the maktab and learns how to make wudhu and perform salaah correctly, we have indeed achieved our objective by the grace of Allah Ta’ala.

Sunnats

  1. Similarly, when teaching the Sunnats try and make sure that the children practice on every Sunnah.
  2. Demonstrate the sunnats to the children and get them to then demonstrate it to the teacher.
  3. Inculcate the love for Sunnah in the lives of the pupils.
  4. Narrate to them stories about the Sahaabah and the love they had for the Sunnah of Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam). There are many incidents of this nature in the Fazaaile Aamaal.

General

  1. Pupils will be tested on previous years grades as well
  2. Practicals of boys and girls must be done separately
  3. Practical exams for Grade 5 girls upwards must be done by an Apa not by the Moulana

The Hens in the Fowl Run

Once upon a time there were many fowls living in a fowl run. Everyday they would all come out into fields and look for food.

One day a snake bit one of the hens on her leg, and the poison of the snake was burning in her body. She quickly sought refuge in the henhouse. When the other hens saw her burning with fever and the poison swelling in her leg they preferred to expel her from the fowl run so that the poison would not spread to them. The hen limped away, crying out in pain. Not because of the snake bite, but because of the abandonment and contempt of her own family at the time when she needed them most. So she left… burning with fever, dragging one of her legs, vulnerable to the cold nights. With each step, a tear fell from her eye. The hens in the henhouse watched her go away, watching her disappear on the horizon. Some said to each other: Let her go… She will die far away from us. When the hen finally vanished into the immensity of the horizon, they were all sure that she had died. Some even looked at the sky, hoping to see vultures flying.

Time passed. Much later, a hummingbird came to the henhouse and announced: Your sister is alive! She lives in a cave far away from here. She recovered, but lost a leg from the snake bite. She has trouble finding food and needs your help. There was silence. Then the excuses began:

  • I can’t go, I’m laying eggs…
  • I can’t go, I’m looking for corn…
  • I can’t go, I have to take care of my chicks…

So, one by one, they all refused the request. The hummingbird returned to the cave without help.

Time passed again. Much later, the hummingbird returned, but this time with painful news: Your sister has passed away… She died all alone in the cave… There is no one to bury her or mourn her. At that moment, a weight fell on everyone. A deep lament filled the henhouse. Those who were laying eggs stopped. Those who were looking for corn left the seeds. Those who were caring for the chicks forgot about them for a moment. Regret hurt more than any poison. Why didn’t we go before? they asked themselves. And without measuring the distance or the effort, they all set off for the cave, crying and lamenting. Now they had a reason to see her, but it was too late.

When they got to the cave, they didn’t find the hen… They only found a letter that said: “In life, many times people can’t cross the street to visit or help you when you’re alive, but they can cross the world to bury you when you die.” Most of the tears at funerals are not from pain, but from remorse and regret. Don’t wait for a funeral to attend, take out the time now to visit family and friends. Tomorrow maybe too late and you will be left with only regrets.
