15th Night of Sha’baan

VIRTUES OF THIS NIGHT

Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) has said, ‘This is the middle night of Sha’baan. Allah Ta’ala looks upon His slaves in this night and forgives those who seek forgiveness and bestows His mercy upon those who make dua for mercy but leaves out those who have hatred (against a Muslim) as they were before, (and does not forgive them unless they clean their hearts from malice).

Hadhrat Aaishah (radiyallahu anha) has reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said, “Hadhrat Jibraeel Alayis salaam came to me and said, “This is the middle night of Sha’baan. Allah Ta’ala frees a large number of people from the fire on this night, more than the number of hair growing on the sheep of the tribe of Kalb.”

The tribe of Kalb was a large tribe in Madinah, who owned many sheep. Therefore, the last sentence of the Hadith indicates the large number of people forgiven on this night by Allah Ta’ala.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Hadhrat Ali Bin Abi Taalib (radiyallahu anhu) narrates that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said, “When it is the night of the middle of Sha’ban, then spend the night in [Salaah/’ibaadah] and fast the [next] day. For Allah Ta’ala descends to the first sky at sunset and announces, “Is there anyone seeking my forgiveness that I may forgive him? Is there anyone seeking sustenance that I may grant it to him? Is there anyone in any difficulty that I may relieve him?” Many other similar announcements are made. These continue till the time of Fajar.”

THOSE WHO ARE DEPRIVED

(On this night) Allah Ta’ala will not even look towards the following people (with mercy), 1. Mushrik, 2. One who harbours ill feelings in his heart towards others, 3. One who cuts off ties with family members, 4. One who allows his pants to flow below the ankles, 5. One who is disobedient to his parents, 6. One who is an alcoholic.

Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is a celebration called the celebration of love which was started by the Christians. As Muslims we should not participate in any Valentine Celebrations. We should not involve ourselves in anything to do with Valentine’s Day, like sending cards, presents, roses, etc., because we will be imitating the Christians. This is what Shaytaan wants from us. He wants us to behave like the Non-Muslims so that he can rob us of our Imaan.

Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) has said, “Whoever imitates a nation will be raised amongst them on the Day of Qiyaamah.” What a severe warning for us! We must make sure that we do not celebrate or imitate any aspect of Valentine’s Day.
This is an un-Islamic celebration which unfortunately many Muslims are also participating in. Our children who attend Non-Muslim schools are also encouraged to give gifts and cards to the opposite gender. We should strongly discourage such activities as this will eventually lead to zina.

Allah Ta’ala has given Muslims certain days and occasions to celebrate like the days of Eidul Fitr and Eidul Adha. We should celebrate on these days.

May Allah Ta’ala keep us firm on our Deen and may He protect us from imitating the non-Muslims. Aameen.

Apa Seedat (Reservoir Hills)

On Monday 3 January 2022, the community of Reservoir Hills lost a prominent, dedicated Apa at the local Maktab, Apa Bilkis Seedat (rahmatullahi alayha). Apa had taught for over 25 years at the maktab and was extremely dedicated to her work. She focused her special attention on each child and was concerned about every child’s education and upbringing.

Towards the latter years of her life, she was given the post of the principal and ran the madrasah with much enthusiasm and passion.

On Saturday mornings she would conduct classes for ladies which she did as a khidmat from her side.

Passion to learn

She herself was very passionate about learning. She attended every Ta’limi Board workshop and would pay careful attention to the advices that were given by the different Ulama. She would make careful notes and implement the advices given.

Apa was doing hifz up until the last few days of her life. Two weeks before she passed away she had resumed her dhor again, which had stopped due to her illness. A person who passes away without completing the hifz of the Qur-aan is made to complete it in the grave.

Many a times, during a staff meeting at the Madrasah, if a young apa mentioned something that she didn’t know or knew and forgot about it, apa would say aloud, “I didn’t know that.” JazakAllah for teaching me something. This was her deep rooted humility.

Passion to teach

The Maktab was her life. She dedicated all her time and effort for the students of the Madrasah. She had great fikr for the Madrasah and for each student irrespective of his race or colour. Apa would regularly check on their progress, see to their transport and ensure that the needy families have enough groceries at home. Apa would sew purdahs for the baaligh girls, and hem the kurtas above the ankles for the boys. She saw to all the needs of the Madrasah. If the blankets at the Madrasah needed a wash, which is used as musallas, she would take it home and have it washed.

At times Apa would give away her entire salary in charity. Towards the end of her life when she was diagnosed with cancer, she did not accept a salary from the Madrasah even though she continued making fikr for the Madrasah and would spend whatever time she could teaching the children.

Apa had a way with teaching children. During the load shedding period she once asked the children how they felt at night in the dark to which many of them said that they did not like it and were afraid of the dark. Apa would then say to them that the light in the grave will come from the daily recitation of Qur-aan Shareef.

Qualities

Apa Bilkis had very little to no attachment to worldly things. She was a very simple person who lived a simple life in a simple home. Apa would give away new abaayas or any extra items in the home. She gave preference to the poor over herself.

Apa was always smiling, always! Apa was someone who would laugh easily and would often joke with learners. This would make the learners feel very comfortable around her.

Apa was one who would try to support and assist anyone in whatever little way possible. If she heard that a widow or single mother is selling something from home, she would not hesitate to support that person.

She was punctual on Tahajjud Salaah and would always make dua for all the apas, students and families. It was apa’s daily mamulaat to get up for tahujjud and make dua for each one by name.

She was always pleased with the decision of Allah. When Apa was diagnosed with third degree cancer, she mentioned happily, “Allah Ta’ala is so Ghafoorur Raheem. He has still kept me independent from people.” (arta farta ..  as Apa would say in Gujarati).

Apa always showed motherly love to all the students and the Apas which made everyone feel special.

These are only a few aspects of her life.

5 days before she had passed away someone had a dream of her in Makkah Shareef with her  husband. Apa was looking towards the Kabah Shareef and her health seemed perfect. She was very happy and full of smiles. Alhamdulillah.

Apa is survived by her husband, two sons and two daughters.

May Allah Ta’ala fill Apas qabr with noor, grant her maghfirah, and shade under his arsh on the day of Qiyaamah as well as the highest stages of Jannah. Aameen.

10 Guidelines for Madrasah Jalsas

The purpose and objective of a jalsa is to;
• Please Allah Ta’ala
• Motivate the pupils by allowing them to participate and giving them prizes for outstanding achievements.
• Pass on some message of Deen to the parents and others who will be attending the madrasah jalsa.

Jalsas should not resemble school concerts and fashion shows. Don’t be extravagant in preparing for the jalsa. No money must be spent on stage decor, props, costumes and other wasteful aspects. The jalsa is a platform to give a message of deen. By wasting money on these items a totally wrong message will be given.

Jalsa preparations should not impact on Madrasah times. Jalsa preparations should take place on Friday afternoons for 15 minutes and children should be called on Saturday mornings to prepare for the jalsa. Besides these two times, no other madrasah times must be used for jalsa prep.
Nazams must not have back ground music and resemble the tunes and lyrics of English and Hindi songs. The meanings of the naaths should be checked by some learned aalim that it does not contain any words of shirk or kufr, etc.

Dialogues maybe prepared which have a good message. No plays and dramas to take place in the jalsa.

Be very careful about intermingling of sexes. [preferably have a mothers only jalsa]
Baaligh boys should not be made to participate in the jalsa. They may participate in a jalsa that is especially for fathers.

Prizes given to pupils should be motivating and educational. Carefully select the prizes for the pupils.

Pupils should not be made to go out and collect funds for the jalsas.

The jalsa is not a concert to entertain the pupils and parents. A few days before the jalsa get all the children to also join the asaatiza to make dua that the jalsa should be a means of hidaayat for all.

Hadhrat Abdullah Al-Muzani (Radiallahu anhu)

In the mountain ranges of Warqaan which is located between Makkah Mukarramah and Madinah Munawwarah, there lived a tribe known as Muzainah. A baby boy was born to parents, from this tribe, who were extremely poor. They named him Abdul Uzza. Not long after his birth, his father passed away leaving behind the young child as an orphan. However, this boy had a paternal uncle who was extremely wealthy and had no children of his own. Therefore he took the innocent young child under his care and showered him with love and kindness as though it was his own child. The youngster grew up to be an adult of fine manners and beautiful conduct. These qualities made him even more beloved to his Uncle.

This young man only came to know about Islam when Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) made Hijrat (migrated) to Madinah Munawwarah. He was intrigued by this new Deen (Religion) and the final messenger of Allah Ta’ala. This spurred him on to gain whatever information possible regarding this ‘new Deen’. In a short period of time, Allah Ta’ala opened up his heart towards the beauty and perfection of Islam leading him to accept Islam without even setting his eyes on Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam). Initially he concealed his Islam and used to worship Allah Ta’ala in secrecy, away from the gazes of people. He had great hope that his uncle would also be guided to the beautiful Deen of Islam but it was not to be. Eventually, he could not contain himself anymore and openly proclaimed his belief in the Oneness of Allah and the risaalat (prophethood) of Nabi Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wasallam). The desire to meet Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) had consumed his heart and mind.

The news of his Islam caused his uncle to go into a fit of rage and he immediately threatened to withdraw all the privileges which he had afforded to the young man. This could not deter this fine lad as Imaan had penetrated deep into the recesses of his heart. He opted for the company of Rasullullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) and gave up everything else. With only a coarse cloth covering his body, he headed towards the blessed city of Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam). The excitement and enthusiasm grew within him as he approached Madinah Munawwarah. He reached Madinah Munawwarah at night and spent the evening in the Masjid. At the time of Fajr salaah, he finally fulfilled his dream of seeing Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam).

After the Fajr Salaah, Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) called him and asked him who he was and from where he had come. Thereafter Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) changed his name from Abdul Uzza to Abdullah. Abdullah (radiallahu anhu) then took up residence in the blessed city of Madinah Munawwarah in the company of Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam). The world had called
him towards it but he chose to close his ears to its call and turned all his attention to the eternal life of the Aakhirah.

Abdullah radiallahu anhu, after migrating to Madinah, participated in all the battles which Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) had set out for. During the expedition of Tabuk, Abdullah (radiallahu anhu) asked Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) to make dua for him to be blessed with martyrdom. Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) made dua in his favour that he be honoured with martyrdom in such a way that he is protected from the sword of an enemy. Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) also explained to him that a person who falls ill and passes away through that illness will be considered a Shaheed (martyr) as well. Within a day after this dua, Abdullah radiallahu anhu developed a fever and passed on into the mercy of Allah Ta’ala.

He passed away as a muhaajir (one who migrates) for the sake of Allah Ta’ala, A mujaahid (warrior) in the path of Allah, in a strange land far away from his family and friends. The Sahaabah (radiallahu anhum) dug his Qabr (grave). Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) himself went down into his Qabr. Abu Bakr and Umar (radiallahu anhuma) passed his body to Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) who lowered him with his own Mubaarak hands into the Qabr. Thereafter Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) made the following dua, “Oh Allah, indeed I was pleased with him, so you also be pleased with him”.

Abdullah bin Mas’ood (radiallahu anhu) stood by the graveside witnessing this amazing sight and said; “If only I was the inmate of this Qabr. By Allah! I wish I was in his place even though I had accepted Islam 15 years before him.” Allah Ta’ala surely recompensed him in the most beautiful of ways.

Respecting the Azaan

Azaan is one of the outstanding signs of Islam. The words of the Azaan denote the oneness and greatness of Allah Ta’ala. The Muazzin calls out the Azaan five times a day inviting the Muslims to perform their salaah with jamaat in the house of Allah. The call of the Muazzin in actual fact is the call of Allah Ta’ala. When the Sahaabah (radiyallahu anhum) heard the Muazzin, they would respond immediately to his call and leave whatever they were doing. Instantly they would start walking to the Masjid for Salaah.

It is necessary for every Muslim to show the highest form of respect for the Azaan as well the person who calls out the Azaan. Respecting the Azaan is actually respecting Allah Ta’ala. Allah Ta’ala has promised a very high and lofty status for the person who calls out the Azaan. Hadhrat Bilal (radiyallahu anhu) was the Muazzin of Rasulullah H. He enjoyed a very high position amongst the companions of Rasulullah H. He would call out the Azaan in Masjidun Nabawi. Rasulullah H loved him a lot.

Respect for the Azaan

When the Azaan is called out, it will be best for us to stop whatever we are doing and reply to the call of the Muazzin. We should reply to the Azaan by repeating the words of the Muazzin.

Nabi-e-Kareem H has mentioned in a Hadith: “Whoever recites the following dua after the azaan it will be compulsory upon me to intercede for him on the Day of Qiyaamah.” (Bukhaari # 614)

Incidents of those who respected the Azaan

There are many incidents of people who were honoured by Allah Ta’ala for showing respect to the Azaan. Hadhrat Moulana Thanwi (RA) mentions an incident of a woman who would respect the Azaan and instruct her household to remain quiet and listen respectfully to the Azaan. She was heard on her deathbed saying in clear Arabic, “These two men are ushering me into Jannah.” Her family commented that she enjoyed this privilege because of the respect she showed to the Azaan.

Zubaydah, was the wife of Haroon Ar-Rasheed. She did lots of charitable works and even dug a canal to provide water for the people of Makkah Mukarramah. When she passed away she was forgiven on account of her showing respect to the Azaan. On one particular day, she was partaking of meals and the Azaan was called out. She stopped eating, straightened the scarf on her head and listened to words of the Azaan replying carefully to each word of the Muazzin. Allah Ta’ala forgave her on account of the respect she showed to the Azaan.

May Allah Ta’ala bless us with the ability of showing respect to the Azaan.

How Should A Muslim View A Calamity?

By: Hadhrat Mufti Muhammad Shafi Saahib (RA)

For Muslims there are lessons to learn in the face of every calamity. Despite having faith in the absolute power of Allah Ta’ala, we are still not focused enough to remember Allah Ta’ala in the face of trials. All our attention is focused only towards material support which we hope will get us out of trouble. We do not take idols, icons and images as our saviours, but tragically the material support systems, the scientific conclusions, vaccines, logistics and rescuing squads have become no less than an idol for us! We become so impressed and engrossed in them that somehow we forget Allah Ta’ala and His absolute power.

Take sickness as an example. When we get sick, we think of nothing but our doctors, physicians and medication. Take the example of a storm or flood. Once we are in it, we hope to be rescued by some person. We feel that our destiny depends on them, and in doing so, we overlook the very Master of the universe in Whose control lies our destiny. We persist in doing this, despite the warning of the Qur-aan Shareef that hardships and accidents are generally the outcome of the evil deeds of human beings themselves and that this calamity is a mild sample of the punishment of the hereafter. When we look at it from this angle, these hardships are actually a mercy for the Muslims. Heedless people are given a wake-up call so that they may use this occasion to seek forgiveness for their evil deeds and start thinking about how to give up sins. In this way they could remain safe from the greater and harsher punishments of the hereafter.

This does not mean that the use of material means through medicine etc. should not be used. Instead what needs to be emphasised is that we should believe in Allah Ta’ala as the supreme controller of everything. As for the use of material means, we should use them too, taking them to be nothing but His blessings, because all means are His creation and His blessings which serve human beings under His command and will. The fire, the air, the water, the dust, and all forces on the face of the earth are subservient to the command of Allah Ta’ala. Unless He so wills, fire cannot burn, water cannot extinguish and medicine cannot bring any benefit. History teaches us that human beings who become heedless of Allah Ta’ala and start relying on their self-invented mechanisms face a relative increase in concerns and calamities.

Today, the number and variety of instruments invented to remove pain and difficulty and to improve comfort and luxury are things that man had not even dreamt of half a century ago. Despite this, man was not as sick and troubled as man is today. Similarly, we have vaccines to fight against epidemics, medical squads to cover accidents and advanced communication systems which would hasten the provision of emergency care and equipment. However, the more we increase our material defenses against accidents and calamities, the more we seem to be affected by them. On the other hand, in the past, the disobedience of Allah Ta’ala was not as bold as it is today. People used items of comfort as a blessing from Allah Ta’ala for which they were grateful. However, man today wants to use these same conveniences and measures with a sense of self-achievement and pride, which in actual fact is rebellion in disguise. Undoubtedly, despite all of our advancements we cannot save ourselves from hardships.

Therefore, a true Muslim, in order to remove his pain and anxiety at the time of distress, should first turn to Allah Ta’ala and rely on Him instead of only depending on material solutions to relieve him from his difficulty. If he fails to do that, he will meet the same end being witnessed today. Whatever material solutions there are available should be used as a blessing from Him. However, if we take a look at the remedy proposed by Qur-aan Shareef, the only one way of staying safe from all kinds of hardship is to turn to Allah Ta’ala, The Creator of the universe.[Adapted from Ma’aariful Qur-aan by Mufti Muhammad Shafi Saahib (rahmatullahi alayh)]

A Muallim/ah’s Dua

O Allah the wise, the bestower of wisdom
Help me to remember that I work with the most precious of all your creation, an innocent child.
Help me always to remember that I am leaving my mark on him, which time will not erase.
Grant me sabr and patience with those who are slow to learn and tolerance with those who refuse to learn.
When I have to chastise them help me to do so with firmness and yet with love
Prevent me from using a sarcastic and biting tongue and
always help me to encourage and never to belittle those who do their best even if the best is not very good.
Help me to help the children, not only to store things in their memories, but create things in their minds and action in their lives.
Despite all the feebleness and weakness of my teaching,
Help me to remember that the future FLAG BEARERS of Islam are in my hands.
Help me O wise and merciful Allah to follow in the footsteps of the best teacher and the guide of humanity
Hadhrat Muhammad Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam
Help us all O Allah! my learners and myself. Aameen!
